Is there a life for dolorean outside of myspace? December 23, 2006

We’ve been feeling it from all sides here at the dolorean headquarters… from fans, from business types, from label honchos. They spent our entire promotional budget on M.I.T. bean-counters who crunched the numbers and found that the probability of dolorean’s “big break” was going down each and every day we refused to put up a myspace page. Nobody had any idea how many friends we had, and sadly, there was no way to accurately document how many times we checked our own page to make our plays-per-day count skyrocket. In addition to all this previously metioned dolorean-related internet chaos there was no forum for fans or complete strangers (mostly the later) to leave witty one liners and mindless self-promotional banter on our web-page.

I decided that there has to be a middle-ground and chose to develop a wordpress-based dolorean website. Yes, the format looks a little “bloggy” but it allows us to post current information easily and link it to other pages, photos, videos, and music. For starters I’VE ADDED 3 NEW SONGS FROM THE UPCOMING DOLOREAN RELEASE. THEY’RE LISTED ON THE “recordings” PAGE. (Sorry there are no seizure-inducing banner ads to look at while the song plays, I guess you’ll just have to listen to the song). While there isn’t any way to be “friends” with dolorean through the site, if you wanted to be friends in real life you could come up to one of us at a show and ask a question, start a conversation about something of interest, or bring up an experience that we might have in common. That way we could be actual friends. Also, you could email us through the website. We’ve always responded to every email that we’ve received. Also, if you’re interested in the community of friends and artists that dolorean creates within, we’ve got an on-going, ever-growing list of links on the right side of the webpage that will connect you to the things and people that inspire us to do good work. Lastly, since I don’t see the value of a one-sided conversation (what sort of friend would we be), the wordpress format allows for an easy way for readers to add comments and replies to the posts that we put up. (Witty one liners and mindless self-promotional banter included!)

I hope that this site works. I hope that we have a great exchange through this website and even moreso in person when we play shows in support of the new record.

All the best,
Al James and the Dolorean gang

P.S. Most of the people and musicians that I love the most in this world have a myspace page. I just wasn’t made for these times.

Love the new songs and I look forward to seeing that “performances” page fill up soon!

As for myspace, for me it has nothing to do with making “friends” and everything to do with finding new music. In any case, I think your approach here is a nice idea.

Just wanted to wish you well for the new website and album which I’m sure will expand your audience. I look forward to discussing your music and other topics with other Dolorean fans here

Hi, Pete Simpson introduced me to you music earlier this year and I’m really looking forward to the release of you forthcoming album. Really enjoy Denny’s Tune, very atmospheric. Hoping you’ll make the UK (Scotland??) in the near future.

myspace has certainly lost its “innocence” over the years. And I suppose it’s unfortunate that the benefits of digital media have been exploited to the point that only purists pursue hard copys of music. I’ve been contemplating my own musical creations, and whether or not I can “make it” without myspace (I loathe the thought of having one), and I think your motives are great and admirable. But I think the exposure is unparalleled, and perhaps through a space like that, good musicians can convert some into purists. Or maybe not. Nevertheless, I think it important to keep good, quality music as the focus, and not the ridiculous database of pseudo-friends, nor the flashy advertisements and sleek backgrounds. So perhaps you could compromise with a space that doesn’t do the friend thing, but just remains grounded on the music (I’m sure you’ve heard this argument a million times). I would just worry that a lot of future fans may never have the opportunity to hear your wonderful music.

Thanks,
Galen

I think it’s pretty funny that almost all the post on here are telling you to get a my space( or defending my space). I say screw them. If it’s in your cards to be successful then it’s going to happen. With my space or with out. Besides if people are on the internet at my space all they have to do is type in your website to check you out. I congratulate you on your choice. I only wish more artist had the confidence that you have.

Dolorean already IS successful. I’m assuming Brandon meant “commercially” successful, which of course is a different ball game. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that true success actually does get rewarded as it should anymore. Maybe it’s always been that way, but I’ve only been around since ’74. And lately, it’s as if the minute art “succeeds” for the masses, it loses something. I hope still Dolorean blows up, because the music is that good. But I understand Al’s reservations.

There is already a Dolorean myspace page.
